I just finished playing Heavy Rain by Quentic Dream and is really impressed and amazed what video games are able to achieve in terms of expressing complex human emotions. Kudos to every one at Quentic Dream for making video game history and for SONY for making a huge risk with this title. But I like to think that it finally paid off. Now let me remind you that Heavy Rain is not a perfect game and it has it's faults. But when you out weight the pros against cons, the answer is obvious. This title does make video game history. Its that good. Let me just go through what I felt all throughout the game and give my conclusion.
Well, the start of the game is not that exiting and is far from challenging. So nothing exiting there. Getting used to the controls was not a huge deal to me partly because I have previously played the demo version of it and was halfway used to some of the gameplay mechanics. But I was given a run for my money later on. Anyways, after getting through the first few boring stages the real fun began. And it was challenge after challenge. Not only the pure physical button matching, but also psychological challenges as well. Trying to figure out who is the origami killer is the whole theme of the game, but underneath you have a lot going on. The first scene I was amazed was the mall scene where Ethen losses his son. My heart was pounding at the end of the scene. Literary my heart was beating faster and faster. This is a rare moment in my game playing history and I can't clearly distinguish another game that brought out these emotions in me like Heavy Rain did. The next big moment for me was the highway car driving scene. It was one heck of a ride. I am wordless and was holding my wireless controller like I would a steering wheel the whole time. It was that suspenseful. Even after that scene ended, I was still going through it in my mind. The plot seems a bit off sometimes, but made sense for the most part. The way things tuned out for me, the ending was very dramatic. Well its safe to say that the ending for me was not what you expect from a normal game or a film for that matter and ironically is much much more realistic to a more real world scense. That said to this time I'm thinking of the ending.
The conclusion is that I love this game despite its flaws and thinks that this is a game, every game enthusiast should check out, because we have the making of gaming history in this title.
